Allen averaged 209.88 to finish with 1,679 pins and join the group of 37 top qualifiers who advanced to Sunday’s cashers round.

In third place was Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, with 1,670 followed by Xtra Frame Storm Cup points leader Dom Barrett of England with a 1,663 total and Kyle Sherman of O'Fallon, Mo., with 1,661 pins.

Tommy Jones to Defend Title in PBA Xtra Frame Greater Jonesboro Open

by Bill Vint May 31, 2017 09:15

JONESBORO, Ark. – Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., who converted his victory in the 2016 PBA Xtra Frame Greater Jonesboro Open into the end-of-season Xtra Frame points championship, will return to Jonesboro Bowling Center Saturday and Sunday to defend his title against a potent field of PBA Tour champions, international players and future stars of professional bowling.

Jones, who defeated top qualifier Kyle Troup of Taylorsville, N.C., 237-228, to win in Jonesboro in 2016, is one of 29 PBA Tour title winners who will compete for the $12,500 first prize and a PBA Tour title this weekend.

PBA Tour champions among the early entries include Dick Allen, Columbia, S.C.; DJ Archer, Friendswood, Texas; Chris Barnes, Double Oak, Texas; Dom Barrett, England; Josh Blanchard, Mesa, Ariz.; Mitch Beasley, Clarksville, Tenn.; Jacob Butturff, Tempe, Ariz.; Ryan Ciminelli, Cheektowaga, N.Y.; Tom Daugherty, Riverview, Fla.; Graham Fach, Canada; Gary Faulkner Jr., Memphis, Tenn.; Andres Gomez, Colombia; Tom Hess, Urbandale, Iowa; Jones; Marshall Kent, Yakima, Wash.; Francois Lavoie, Canada; Robert Lawrence, Austin, Texas; Chris Loschetter, Avon, Ohio; Wes Malott, Pflugerville, Texas; Bill O’Neill, Langhorne, Pa.; Jake Peters, Henderson, Nev.; Sean Rash, Montgomery, Ill.; Ronnie Russell, Marion, Ind.; Anthony Simonsen, Austin, Texas; Jason Sterner, Rockledge, Fla.; EJ Tackett, Huntington, Ind.; Troup; Stuart Williams, England, and Mike Wolfe, New Albany, Ind.

Challenging the 29 players who have already won PBA Tour titles will be a talented group of young players who are looking to make a name for themselves among the roster of PBA champions, including a handful of players who are involved in what is expected to be a tightly-contested PBA Rookie of the Year race, not to mention the PBA Player of the Year competition.

To add a bit more spice to the event, international players are entered from Argentina, England, Australia, Canada, Japan, Colombia and Malaysia in addition to the U.S.

Another special aspect of the Greater Jonesboro Open is that all PBA members will be competing for Xtra Frame Storm Cup points, awarded to players who finish among the top 20. Jonesboro is the third of seven Storm Cup events that will reward the top five players at the end of the series with shares of $50,000 in bonus prize money.

The tournament gets underway at 8 a.m. Saturday with the first of two eight-game qualifying squads. The other half of the field will bowl its qualifying round at 2:30 p.m., with the top one-third of the field advancing to a five-game cashers round Sunday at 8:30 a.m. The top 16 players after 13 games will bowl an eight-game match play round at noon, and the top four after 21 games will compete in the stepladder finals Sunday at 3:45 p.m. All times are Central.

All of Saturday’s and Sunday’s action will be streamed live on PBA’s Xtra Frame online bowling channel. In addition to monthly and annual subscription packages, a three-day subscription is available for only $3.99 (visit xtraframe.tv to sign up).

In addition to the PBA competition, Jonesboro area grassroots bowlers will have an opportunity to bowl with the PBA stars in a pro-am on Friday at 6 and 8:30 p.m. For pro-am information, call Jonesboro Bowling Center at (870) 972-5270.

PBA Spare Shots: Matt O’Grady Wins Southwest “Super” Regional Thriller in Colorado

by Bill Vint March 8, 2017 11:54

Matt O’Grady from Rahway, N.J., normally a QubicaAMF East Region competitor, defeated U.S. Open champion Francois Lavoie of Canada, 279-278, in a thrilling title match to conclude the fifth annual PBA Lakewood Southwest Super Regional, sponsored by Denver Broncos running back C.J. Anderson and Storm Products, Sunday at Holiday Lanes in Lakewood, Colo.

The win was O’Grady’s third in QubicaAMF PBA Regional competition and his first in the PBA Southwest Region.

Lavoie, the 2016 PBA Rookie of the Year, won his first PBA title in last year’s Lakewood event. In this year’s title match, the 23-year-old Canadian started the game with a 7-10 split, picked up one pin, and then threw eight strikes heading into his 10th frame. O’Grady started with four strikes, spared a 10 pin, then struck out to force Lavoie to throw three more strikes to force a sudden death roll-off. A 10 pin on Lavoie’s final shot allowed O’Grady to claim the $5,000 first place check.

O’Grady, who averaged 256.89 for the tournament, qualified second. He edged Dylan Macon of Lubbock, Texas, 2-1, in his Round of 8 match and AJ Chapman from Wichita, Kan., 279-236, in the semifinal round match. Lavoie survived a semifinal round thriller over Andrew Klingler of Grand Rapids, Mich., 269-268, to advance to the title match.

BRONCOS’ C.J. ANDERSON HELPS PROMOTE BOWLING’S “COOL FACTOR”

Speaking of Denver Broncos running back C.J. Anderson, he admitted during the Lakewood tournament that when he was a kid, bowling wasn’t very cool. It was something old people – like his grandmother – did while he spent his time in the bowling center playing arcade games.

As an adult, however, Anderson has done a 180-degree turn, and is now in love with the sport, and all of the many aspects of the game most people overlook. In fact, he’s become so fascinated with the sport, and the advanced skills one has to develop in order to compete at the PBA level, he decided to sponsor a PBA Southwest “Super Regional” at Holiday Lanes in Lakewood, Colo., last weekend. A two-time participant in the CP3 PBA Celebrity Invitational, Anderson used that platform to explain his passion for the sport to members of the Denver area news media who came out to cover the event.

“C.J. Anderson is cool,” said PBA CEO and Commissioner Tom Clark, who also attended the event. “A great running back for the Denver Broncos who scores touchdowns in the Super Bowl is cool. All of us who are involved with bowling know it’s cool, but a lot of people have a perception that tells them it’s not. So when you have a guy like C.J. devote this much time and passion to the sport, it really elevates the cool factor in our game.”

Anderson, who has competed in PBA Regional events during the NFL’s offseason, said he is hopeful that bowling can rise to the level of popularity that would allow for more people to make a living doing it. He is also hoping that more young people will pursue scholarships in bowling, which are often available without acquiring a high level of skill .

“The bigger picture is to get other sponsors and to get a bunch of people into bowling and get the PBA back to what it was when I was younger and when I watched my grandma bowl,” Anderson said.

Anderson, who employs an unusual “wrong foot” delivery, bowled in the Lakewood event and averaged 197.88 for a respectable 68th-place finish in the field of 100.

631960468In addition to Anderson, Boston Red Sox star Mookie Betts (left) also has received considerable mainstream media related to his bowling skills, including a great feature story by ESPN.com’s Scott Lauber, after bowling with Anderson in the CP3 PBA Celebrity Invitational in January. Media coverage of Anderson’s and Betts’ bowling activities are posted in the “In The News” section of pba.com (http://denver.cbslocal.com/2017/03/06/anderson-devotes-time-passion-to-the-sport-of-bowling/#.WL5cHHsBrgF.twitter; http://www.espn.com/blog/boston/red-sox/post/_/id/51908/if-baseball-doesnt-work-out-for-mookie-betts-theres-always-pro-bowling).

QUBICA AMF PBA REGIONAL UPDATE: WILLIAMS, LANE, ALLEN WIN TRIOS EVENT

PBA60 competitor Dennis Lane, PBA Tour champion Dick Allen and PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. defeated Ken Parks, Dale Csuhta and Kyle Troup, 213-201, to win the PBA South Region’s Decker Appraisal PBA/PBA50/PBA60 Baker Trios event presented by Hammer at Valley Lanes in Harrisonburg, Va., Sunday.

Williams, in the PBA50 role, struck in the 10th frame to seal the victory and pick up his 11th PBA50 Regional title to go along with his record 47 PBA Tour titles, 32 PBA Regional titles and 10 PBA50 Tour titles for a composite total of 100 PBA titles. Williams had been tied with fellow PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber with 99 combined titles until Sunday.

This was the third time the PBA South Region hosted the multi-age trio event, but the first time it was hosted by Valley Lanes. Each member of the winning team earned a $1,700 share of the $5,100 first prize.

In the first stepladder match, Lane, Williams and Allen defeated the team of Ross McDonald, Thad Rand and Richie Wolfe from Rapidan, Va., 218-168, to advance to the title match.

They swept all 12 matches as they cruised to the $5,000 winners’ check and Lawrence’s first regional title in 24 years.
